"The piece de resistance, however, was the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto, composed in 1948.
Wayne du Maine is one of the finest trumpet virtuosi I have ever heard. His precision and purity of tone, ending a flawless baroque run on exactly the right note, with exactly the right shading, were incredible. His performance raised the orchestra to new heights, especially in the second movement, which might have been written by a slightly unbuttoned Ravel.
The finale, which sounded much like "An American in Paris," could not have been played better by an expanded studio orchestra for MGM."
